The Cemeteries (cont.)
 

Families will prepare the graves for the celebration days in advance. Because it is believed that the souls of the children return to our world on October 31st at about 3pm, it is about that time when the cemeteries truly come alive. At night on October 31st is when families start holding vigils at the gravestones. All the candles are lit, and the offerings and flowers decorate the tombstones. This will continue until the mid-afternoon of November 2nd.

 

Many plastic and candy skulls can be seen in the cemeteries adorning the tombs.


I asked to take a photo of these very friendly kids and they chatted with me for a bit.
They are sitting over the grave of their six-year-old brother who died
three years ago from an illness I was unfamiliar with.
